Thoughts on Card Layouts

Thoughts on Card Layouts

Hi! My names Phil Loyer and I wanted every to get a view into the way Wyvern Gaming designs our games. Out first game was a huge success, as I’m sure most of you know that that is Cthulhu: A Deck Building Game. While the game was great and was visually appealing due to the art, there was still room for improvement. Our card layouts successfully conveyed the game play of the game but it was really all the well-organized or visually appealing to some people. So, we have taken a shot at applying a new card layout which will give a better idea of what a card is at a glance, such as spell, equipment, actions, gear, locations, and allies.  First let’s take a look at the original card design.

These cards look good and do convey the necessary information in order to play the game. We wanted a dark theme when we did this. However, based on player feedback many felt that it was a little too dark. So, we decided we would change it up a little and give each type of card a distinctive color so that players can pick out each card type quickly. Let’s take a look at the new design with the same 4 cards.

All the information is still clearly readable, but now they are easily differentiated by color so they can be picked out more easily. For example, if one were playing the magician they would most likely focus on spell cards, so they would be on the look out for purple cards in that case. The theme over all is still dark but it also makes the card art pop a little more than it did previously.

Short Order Hero Kickstart Launch

Short Order Hero Kickstart Launch

Do you have what it takes to be the next Short Order Hero?

The creators of Cthulhu: A Deck Building Game and Onami are launching an exciting new game, Short Order Hero, May 15th, on Kickstarter!

Wyvern Gaming is proud to present, Short Order Hero. Build recipes faster and better than your opponents in this devious and cutthroat game of battling line cooks in a greasy spoon. Up to five cooks will undertake an epic culinary battle with unique ingredients and recipes in the diner arena, see who comes out on top in this family friendly gastric competition. With concept and illustration by former Disney and Warner Bros. artist, Greg Wray, players are sure to delight in the style and design put into this game.

Short Order Hero will be at Gen Con 2017 where copies of the game will be available for Kickstarter pickup, sale and demo.

About the game:
Short Order Hero is a devious, cutthroat, and challenging game for friends wanting to flex their master culinary chops. The story behind the game is that you are one of two to five short order cooks working in a greasy diner. The owner of the diner tells the crew that at the end of the night he will only keep one cook in the kitchen, and the battle is on!  You work your rump roast off to serve the best recipe you can, but your competition will do their very best to sabotage you; as you seek to ruin their recipes and their chances as well.

Can you win and secure the job and become the next Short Order Hero?

Five meals have been ordered and each cook vies to create the best. Each cook is dealt seven Ingredient Cards that they will use to both make their recipe worthy, and make their opponents’ recipes the worst. Perhaps add a little Spices Ingredient Card to perk up the final dish? Or perhaps some Hairs and Cockroaches in your opponent’s recipe to make their dish disgusting? You’re the one vying to become the best short order cook possible, so you get to decide.

The cook with the highest total recipe value from all their prepared dishes wins and becomes the Short Order Hero!

Can you stand the heat of this competitive kitchen? Find out with Short Order Hero!

Gen Con 2016 Wrap Up

Gen Con 2016 Wrap Up

GenCon 2016 is now over. What a blast. As first time exhibitors we didn’t know what to expect, but man we really had a great show!

As new publishers we wanted to make a good first impression, so we worked extra hard to have a booth that would stand out from the crowd. Going into it we felt like it may have gone over the top, but wow we sure are glad we went all in. It was well worth it.

Our Jack of All Trades, Wes, was the mastermind of the booth’s construction, costume design, and general logistics. It was a lot of work. He’s been working on the booth itself for about 6 months in preparation for Gen Con. It was certainly a challenge getting the booth and product in place. We went up early Tuesday morning to make sure we had plenty of time to get everything set. We’re glad we did.

Having a great booth certainly attracted a lot of people to take a closer look at what we had. When they did stop and look they saw the great art work in both games and a lot of times stayed for demos. We also dressed the part in the booth wearing 1920’s attire to fit the Cthulhu theme.

The exhibit hall was packed! We were lucky to have one of the hottest new games Scythe on the same aisle as us. Many times people were shoulder-to-shoulder. Our booth was constantly filled. The only time it slowed down was during the lunch hour. It was crazy busy the whole time. I don’t think I talked that much in my life.

We loved having some of our Kickstarter backers stop by our booth to pick up their goods. We could not have done this without them. It was great to put faces with names.

However the absolute best thing about Gen Con was the people we met. We made some great contacts with industry people that will probably propel Wyvren Gaming into the future, but it was our neighbors on Entrepreneurial Avenue that we’re just awesome.

  • The guys at Card Caddy have a great product that we cross promoted with, their card tray product is very useful. Check it out.
  • Michael at Twistocity is a great guy! His social tongue twisting party game is a LOT of fun! It had our team cracking up.
  • We also made friends with the good folks at Lay Waste Games who had Dragoon for sale and the show.

Of course we have to thank our volunteers, our friends and family that greatly helped make all this happened. Thank you.

For other start-up companies that are considering making the jump to Gen Con next year, do it. It is well worth it. I recommend going big!
